Why it matters
Your niche’s category rate decides whether the site pays off
Amazon Associates doesn’t pay a flat rate. You earn a percentage of the sale, and that percentage is set by the product’s category, not its price. The spread is enormous: some categories pay 10% or more, while others pay as little as 1%. Two $100 sales can earn you $10 or $1 depending only on what the product is.
Knowing the rate for your niche is the difference between a site that scales and one that never quite pays off. This table lists Amazon’s standard US category rates so you can check yours at a glance, then use the Commission Calculator to turn a rate into an earnings estimate.
How it works
How to use these rates
Find your category
Scan the table for the category your products fall under. Amazon groups products broadly, so pick the closest match.
Note the rate
That percentage is what you earn on the item price for a qualifying sale in that category.
Estimate your earnings
Drop the rate, a typical price and your expected volume into the Commission Calculator to see monthly numbers.
Tips & insights
- Rates trend down over time. Amazon has cut several category rates over the years, so treat any published figure as a snapshot and confirm the current number in your dashboard.
- Category, not price, sets the rate. A pricey item in a low-rate category (electronics, around 3% to 4%) can pay less than a cheaper item in a high-rate one (home, around 8%).
- Special bounties pay flat fees. Sign-ups for Prime, Audible, Amazon Music and business accounts pay a fixed dollar amount, not a percentage, and can be very lucrative.
- The 24-hour cart applies here too. You earn the category rate on whatever qualifying items the visitor buys in that window, so a low-rate click can still become a high-rate purchase.
- Rates differ by marketplace. The US, UK and EU stores each publish their own schedule, so check the one your audience actually buys from.
